Reading Renaissance Program
Saint
Paschal Baylon School offers the Reading Renaissance program, which
is also known as Accelerated
Reader, as a reading
enrichment program for our students. This program is coordinated by
School Librarian Mrs. Donna Howard and her Library Aide, Mrs. Sandy Reed.
Through this interactive, software-based, individualized reading program, we help our students more fully develop their reading skills; increase their enjoyment of reading; develop higher-end critical thinking skills; and hopefully become “lifelong readers.”
The Reading Renaissance program is customized for each individual student at SPBS. At the beginning of each school year, students take a baseline electronic reading test in the library (the STAR test). This test provides an individual “reading level” for the student, which becomes the starting point for their personal reading goals for that particular school year. Students then use computer-generated quizzes, to assess their comprehension of books they have chosen to read. It also helps them to assess and monitor their own progress.
Generally, students
in grades 2-8 participate in our Reading Renaissance enrichment program;
however, SPBS students in Kindergarten and First Grade may also qualify
to participate. Students receive certificates and are honored on a
bulletin board in the library whenever individual goals are met. The
Reading Renaissance program allows each student to read for enjoyment
at their own individual level, progress to new levels at their own
pace, and even assess their own progress.
