Fifth Grade

In Religion we attend Mass every Friday with the whole school. We also spend time learning more about the sacraments, saints, miracles and family life. This religion curriculum is provided by the Los Angeles Archdiocese Department of Catholic Schools.
Math is also an important part of our curriculum. Division, fractions, decimals are mastered during Fifth Grade. Ratios, proportions, statistics, pre-algebra, measurements and the metric system are some of the things we learn.
Language Arts
is another important discipline we continue to develop with
book reports, listening, comprehension, introduction to poetry
and the Reading Renaissance Program,
which we do in collaboration with our school library program.
Social studies is a substantial part of our academic curriculum and drives many fun activities. We make reports on California, the states, and the United States Presidents, while studying the Age of Exploration, the Colonies, the American Revolution, etc…
Fifth Grade field trips are designed to reinforce learning in social studies and fine arts. The trips include a visit to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library (every year) and the Stagecoach Museum (on alternate years). In addition, Fifth Graders attend a live performance each year at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza or the Pepperdine Smothers Theater in Malibu.
Fifth Grade
also is the year our students can become altar servers, and play on our SPBS Bears sports teams for the first time. Please see SPBS Sports Program.

Fifth Grade Science Class with Mrs. Katie Reith involves hands-on discoveries. Fifth Grade is a "bridge year", as we help prepare our students to move on to the SPBS Jr. High program, while at the same time building skills and forming friendships.
