Food For Books Fund Raising Program

At SPBS, we use the California State Standards as a framework for our curriculum, along with guidelines provided by the Los Angeles Department of Catholic Schools.

In order to more effectively teach to these standards, one of the tools we use is text books which have been aligned with those specific state standards. However, purchasing consumable books and updating each text book series is extremely expensive.

Our students’ books are provided to them by SPBS. We do not charge an added “book fee.” So we have created our hot lunch program to be a “designated fund raiser”. 100% of the net profits from our hot lunch program is used to provide new text books for our students. And that is why we call our hot lunch program “Food for Books.”

This hot lunch program has been a very successful form of fundraising for SPBS. We provide tasty, well-balanced and nutritious lunches for our students Monday-Thursday each week. Parents select and purchase only the lunches they wish on a monthly basis.

Through our “Food for Books” program, we have been able to update text books in each grade level during the past five years. We have also helped defray the ongoing cost of replacing consumable books in the lower grades, thereby providing a direct benefit to our students and their parents. The success of this program has therefore been a “win-win.” Our families are able to participate in a nutritious hot lunch program four days each week. And the school uses the profits to provide new books for our students.

Hot lunches are prepared and served by our staff with the assistance of parent volunteers. Please send us an email if you would like to volunteer to help with this program. It is a great way to earn volunteer hours, socialize with other school parents, and spend time with students!
