School-Wide Art Program

St. Paschal Baylon School provides a Standard based comprehensive, hands-on-art and art appreciation program for grades K-8. Our school’s art teacher, in conjunction with the Junior High art teacher, coordinates this exciting program.
This program builds an appreciation and understanding of art and utilizes many types of application, including oil and chalk pastels, watercolor, acrylic, collage, clays, and mixed media. At the same time, an important component of our art program is to build confidence in the students about their ability to create art, while increasing their proficiency in this important area of curriculum
In Kindergarten through Second Grade, students explore the basic elements and principles of art and design and are introduced to different art materials and their application.
In Third through Fifth Grade, students develop their perceptual skills and visual arts vocabulary, as they use expanded art media to create unique works of art.
In Sixth Grade the students review art from Prehistoric Cave, through Ancient Europe, Renaissance and Impressionism, and create works in the style of a major artist from each art period. The class culminates in a tour of the antiquity collections at the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades.
In Seventh Grade, the students move from Impressionism, through Cubism and Abstract Art into the Surrealist and other Modern Art disciplines. Again, they create personal art in varied media from major artists of the respective periods. The Seventh Grade tours the Getty
Center in West Los Angeles during the last trimester to view pieces from many of the artists studied during the year.
The Eighth Grade, in conjunction with the focus on American History, studies the major American artists from each related period such as Calder, Moses, Lawrence, Homer and Warhol. They, also, complete works in the style of each of the featured artists. The Junior High art program will conclude with a visit to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and its collections which feature major works from all art periods studied throughout the program.
Each school year ends with the St. Paschal Baylon School Art Show, which is held in conjunction with our Open House in late May, for the families and friends of our students.
